Ever since cell phones starting incorporating tiny cameras, there have been serious privacy issues–kids snapping pictures of their teacher in the locker room and so on. And then posting them online! But this new product takes this to a frightening level. The beautifully designed case is unobtrusive; in a cluttered apartment you don’t notice it; it stands up and can take quite a range of view. Of course, the government has all sorts of things like this already, but now an average citizen, or an enterprising private detective, or a disgruntled romantic partner (or all three!) can set one up and capture an hour of video at a time, in high resolution which leaves no doubt as to who is who.

Of course, for a long time, it’s been possible to set up surreptitious tape recorders, but this changes things: Even if it’s just a body walking by once in a while, and mostly just voice that is captured, the video imagery adds something that no jury can refuse. So it’s gotten to the point where it’s just not sporting; like one of those lures scientifically designed to get every bass in the lake to impale itself against the barbs, this is just upsetting the odds too much. It’s dirty pool!

Time was when a detective went against you, it was a game of matching wits–it was a dance in a way, and there was a sort of mutual respect. (As in, for example, Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment [see my review!] or Alfred Bester’s The Demolished Man [ditto!].) But with this, you just set ‘em up and knock ‘em down. It’s the transition from a world of hunters to the slaughterhouse. It’s just not right [57].

Why in the world would anyone buy this when you can get a CHEAPER, BETTER, HD version by Kodak? Can someone help me.

My “white” Flip Video only worked for 5 minutes before it shut down and refused to turn on again. I did all of the things that the support team suggested such as pushing the “reset” button, but to no avail. I therefore sent the machine back to Amazon but reordered a black one which has been fantastic! I don’t know if there was a problem with the “color” or what….but I have been more than satisfied with my second one. Therefore, this review reflects on my white Flip Video, not my black one.

After using it a few times, I tried to hook it up to a TV and it quit working completely and permanently.
